The Indonesian government provides financial aid, known as the Kemitraan Negara Berkembang Scholarship (KNB Scholarship), to prospective international students from developing nations who wish to study for a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at one of Indonesia’s universities. The idea for the scholarship originated during the 10th Conference of Heads of State of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) nations, which took place from September 1–6, 1992. In the subsequent year, prospective students from NAM member nations were first informed of the scholarship by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

Applying procedure:

  • Visit the KNB Scholarship website at https://knb.kemdikbud.go.id/ to download the offering letter for the scholarship.
  • Complete the online application process; submit the offering letter, official passport, English proficiency test (for applicants from non-English speaking countries), recommendation letter from the Indonesian Embassy, recommendation from employer/immediate supervisor, academic transcripts and certificates from prior education, recommendation letter from a potential research supervisor at one of the partner universities for the KNB Scholarship (only for doctoral applicants), and statement of purpose for studying in Indonesia (only for doctoral applicants).
  • Add a letter of recommendation from the prospective research supervisor from one of the universities that is a KNB Scholarship partner.
  • Give a brief explanation of your goals for their education in Indonesia.
  • The KNB Scholarship Website will host an online broadcast of the election results, and the Indonesian Embassy publication network will formally announce them.

Scholarship Coverage

Indonesian Government KNB Scholarships provide the recipient with the following benefits:

  • A Settlement Allowance of IDR 1,250,000 will be given to new students upon
    their arrival in Indonesia;
  •  While taking the Indonesian language course and preparatory programs, the
    new students will only receive a Living Allowance of IDR 2,550,000 per month;
  • During the Master Program, the KNB students will receive a scheme of monthly
    allowance as detailed below:
     Living Allowance IDR 2,550,000
     Research Allowance IDR 400,000
     Books Allowance IDR 350,000
  • A health insurance with a maximum of IDR 200,000 monthly premium (In case of
    the cost of medical services exceeded to those covered by the health insurance,
    the difference should be borne by the student);
  •  A round-trip international airfare (economy class) from the international airport
    of the student’s home countries to Indonesia, including local transport to the host university.

Required Documents:

For Bachelor’s Degree:

  • The scholarship application deadline is 21 years old.
  • Possess a high school diploma (please send a scanned copy of your diploma and your academic records in either Bahasa or English). Please be aware that applicants with a bachelor’s degree are not qualified for the bachelor’s degree scholarship.
  • Possess the following score on the English Proficiency Test: score of 477 on the TOEFL, 53 on the TOEFL IBT, 5.5 on the IELTS, and 510 on the TOEIC (the certificate has to be earned within the last two years). Participants of foreign nationality who are from English-speaking nations, or university participants who are enrolled in English-language programs (as indicated in the participant diploma or transcript), are exempt from submitting the English proficiency document as long as they provide official documentation from their home institution.
  • To apply for the KNB scholarship, submit a reference letter from the Indonesian Consulate General or Embassy
  • Provide a recommendation letter in English or Bahasa (if working) from your employer or immediate supervisor to apply for the KNB scholarship.
  • Provide a letter of academic recommendation in either Bahasa or English from your previous schools.
  • Give a high school diploma and academic transcript in either Bahasa or English.
  • Provide an official passport that is valid for at least two more years as proof of citizenship.

Master Degree:

  • The scholarship application deadline is 35 years of age.
  • Own a bachelor’s degree (please include an English or Bahasa scan of your degree certificate and transcripts). Please be aware that holders of master’s degrees are not qualified to apply for the master’s scholarship.
  • Possess the following score on the English Proficiency Test: Scores of 500 on the TOEFL ITP, 61 on the TOEFL IBT, 6.0 on the IELTS, and 575 on the TOEIC (the certificate must be received within the last two years). Participants of foreign nationality who are from English-speaking nations or university participants who are enrolled in English-language programs (as indicated in the participant diploma or transcript), are exempt from submitting the English proficiency document as long as they provide official documentation from their home institution.
  • To apply for the KNB scholarship, submit a reference letter from the Indonesian Consulate General or Embassy.
  • Provide a recommendation letter in English or Bahasa (if working) from your employer or immediate supervisor in order to apply for the KNB scholarship.
  • Provide a letter of academic recommendation in either Bahasa or English from your previous schools.
  • Give a copy of your bachelor’s degree academic transcript in either Bahasa or English.
  • Provide an official passport that is valid for at least two more years as proof of citizenship.

Master Programs:

  • The scholarship application deadline is 40 years of age.
  • Possess a master’s degree (please include an English or Bahasa scan of your degree diploma and transcripts). Kindly note that individuals with a doctorate are not qualified to apply for the doctorate degree scholarship.
  • Get a letter of recommendation in either Bahasa or English from the prospective research supervisor at one of the universities that partner with KNB Scholarship offers.
  • Provide a statement of intent in English or Bahasa that explains, at minimum, why they are studying in Indonesia, why they want to study the subject they have chosen, and what their plans are for the remainder of their academic career (i.e., their dissertation proposal).
  • Possess the following score on the English Proficiency Test: 530 on the TOEFL ITP, 71 on the TOEFL IBT, 6.0 on the IELTS, and 640 on the TOEIC (the certificate must be received within the last two years). Participants of foreign nationality who are from English-speaking nations, or university participants who are enrolled in English-language programs (as indicated in the participant diploma or transcript), are exempt from submitting the English proficiency document as long as they provide official documentation from their home institution.
  • To apply for the KNB scholarship, submit a reference letter from the Indonesian Consulate General or Embassy.
  • Provide a recommendation letter in English or Bahasa (if working) from your employer or immediate supervisor to apply for the KNB scholarship.
  • Provide a letter of academic recommendation in either Bahasa or English from your previous schools.
  • Give a master’s degree academic transcript in either Bahasa or English, together with an academic certificate.
  • Provide an official passport that is valid for at least two more years as proof of citizenship.
