The Punjab Group of Colleges filed a request for the creation of a university in the province with the Government of Punjab on August 15, 1996. Upon its founding, the Punjab Institute of Computer Science (PICS), Punjab College of Commerce (PCC), and Punjab College of Information Technology (PCIT) comprised the central administration of the institution.

After reorganization in 2004, the University of Central Punjab’s Faculty of Management Studies and Faculty of Information Technology now house the PCBA and PICS, respectively. The University of Central Punjab’s faculties of law and commerce, respectively, oversee the operations of the Punjab Law College and the Punjab College of Commerce. 2002 saw the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering (FOE).
